Hypocrisy (nafiq) in Islam is used to describe those who make an outward display of Islam whilst inwardly concealing kufr(disbelief). Hypocrisy in Islam dates way back to the era of the Prophet (SAW) when Islam was first established as a religion. The hypocrites then were called Munafiqun; they put up an act of being part of the believers when they actively sought to undermine the Muslim community and destabilize Islam from the inside. The Holy Quran warns against hypocrisy: #1. Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them [Al-Nisaa 4:145] #2. When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of Allah. Yea, Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His Messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars. (Surah Al-Munafiqun, 1) #3. What ye suffered on the day the two armies Met, was with the leave of Allah, in order that He might test the believers,- (Surah Al-Imran, 166) #4. And the Hypocrites also. These were told: Come, fight in the way of Allah, or (at least) drive (The foe from your city). They said: Had we known how to fight, we should certainly have followed you. They were that day nearer to Unbelief than to Faith, saying with their lips what was not in their hearts but Allah hath full knowledge of all they conceal. (Surah Al-Imran, 167) #5. And there are those who put up a mosque by way of mischief and infidelity to disunite the Believers and in preparation for one who warred against Allah and His Messenger aforetime. They will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good; But Allah doth declare that they are certainly liars. (Surah At-Tawba, 107) #6. Never stand thou forth therein. There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety; it is more worthy of the standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified; and Allah loveth those who make themselves pure. (Surah At-Tawba, 108) #7. of the people there are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day; but they do not (really) believe. (Surah Al-Baqara, 8) #8. When it is said to them: Believe as the others believe: They say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know. (Surah Al-Baqara, 13) #9. When ye proclaim your call to prayer they take it (but) as mockery and sport; that is because they are a people without understanding. (Surah Al-Ma’ida, 58) #10. Whenever there cometh down a Sura, they look at each other, (saying), Doth anyone see you? Then they turn aside: Allah hath turned their hearts (from the light); for they are a people that understand not. (Surah At-Tawba, 127) #11. Among them are some who (pretend to) listen to thee: But canst thou make the deaf to hear,- even though they are without understanding? (Surah Yunus, 42) #12. Turnest thou not thy sight towards those who were forbidden secret counsels yet revert to that which they were forbidden (to do)? And they hold secret counsels among themselves for iniquity and hostility, and disobedience to the Messenger. And when they come to thee, they salute thee, not as Allah salutes thee, (but in crooked ways): And they say to themselves, Why does not Allah punish us for our words? Enough for them is Hell: In it will they burn, and evil is that destination! (Surah Al-Mujadala, 8) #13.When they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: We are really with you: We (were) only jesting. (Surah Al-Baqara, 14) May Allah (SWT) protect us against hypocrisy. Amin
