UN: Africa became hardest hit by terrorism this year

The United Nations says Africa was the hardest-hit region by terrorism in the first half of 2021. In a report, UN experts have blamed the growing influence of Daesh and al-Qaeda terrorist groups for the violence. According to the report, affiliates of both groups in parts of Africa boast growing capabilities in fundraising and weapons, including the use of drones. The UNs panel of experts highlighted that several Daesh affiliates are operating in Central and West Africa, while a number of al-Qaeda affiliates are in Somalia and the Sahel region. The experts voiced concern over the growing influence of these terror cells across the region.
