The Algorithmic Picture

Cris Moore August 11, 2009 The idea of an "algorithm" is ubiquitous in computer science, and more recently in many other sciences. The good news is that there is a well-developed mathematical theory of algorithms---indeed, it is arguably the best-developed picture of "complexity" we have. The bad news is that an algorithm is, by definition, something which is solving a fixed problem which is set by some external agency.
