Creating snags for wildlife

Standing, dead large trees are are an essential element of creating biodiversity. Hosting a whole ecosystem, to themselves, woodpeckers and other birds use them for food, nesting and perching. Pollinators also use them as insect motels. These hybrid poplars are now 17 years old and have reached their end of productiveness having outlived their usefulness as part of a windbreak and shelter to young native hardwood trees.
