More than 400 tubes, 2 inches in diameter and 0.165 inch wall were inspected using a PA UT method. The baseline calibration data was produced on mock up welds with internal and external indications. Finally 5% of the welds were inspected with RT to confirm the findings. The advantage of using this technique was that work could continue while inspection was in progress without the need to set up perimeters as would be needed for conventional radiograpy.
