Years of severe drought have created a water crisis in the Mahbubnagar region in Telangana, a state in southern India where half the 35 million population depends on agriculture to earn a living. Now, the Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme, powered by five of ABB's highest capacity motors, lifts river water to a reservoir nearly 300m above ground, from where it can irrigate the nearby farms year-round.
