Elephant Orphans

Elephants are social creatures that live in herds. Baby elephants spend years living with their mothers in the wild. So when an elephant is orphaned, it is a challenge to provide it with what it needs to grow into a healthy, social adult. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an organization that has been caring for orphaned baby elephants for over 40 years. Caretakers stay with the baby elephants all day and night to give them the same amount of social interaction that they would have in the wild. The organization aims to re-introduce the orphans back into the wild eventually. As a species, elephants are being threatened by human activities such as poaching and urban development, which means any effort to save these orphans is an effort to save the species.
