سخنرانی دکتر ریحانه ربانی نژاد، پژوهشگر پسادکتری در NISEC با عنوان "؟Can Proof-of-Space replace wasteful Proof-of-Work" در هجدمین کنفرانس بین المللی انجمن رمز ایران، اصفهان، دانشگاه اصفهان، شهریور 1400 The consensus layer is a critical security component of a blockchain network. Bitcoin blockchain achieves consensus using Proof-of-Work which requires miners to put a substantial amount of wasteful computation to solve puzzles whose solutions are not reusable. Instead of expensive and energy-consuming Proof-of-Work computation, some blockchain projects like Spacemint and Chia network use Proof-of-Space to allow miners participate in the consensus. In such projects, the miner’s resource is not computing power, but they dedicate disk space. While more energy efficient, these disks are still wasted since they are filled with random data. Some other projects like Filecoin decentralized storage marketplace attempt to propose a consensus protocol based on useful work, where the probability that the network elects a miner to create next block is proportional to the sum of storage currently in use in relation to the rest of the network. Miners offer storage and re-use the computation for proof that data is being stored to participate in the consensus. This talk outlines the Proof-of-Space techniques of these blockchain projects.
