Galloping Power Lines

Video shot during the winter storm of January 10, 2011 on Colham Ferry Road in Oconee County. This shows a phenomenon called aeolian vibration, which is a natural forced harmonic vibration caused by a crosswind flowing over a smooth conductor (wire). The crosswind creates vortices on the leeward side of the wire that alternate from top to bottom. If the vibration does not subside on its own, substantial damage to the power line can result.
